The Paradox of Change
Paradox of Change? If you're wondering what these "fancy" words mean, read on...
Paradox - A statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth.
Source: Dictionary.com Have you noticed that the more you resist a feeling, thought, belief or behavior the more it seems to persist? It gets harder to move forward - to change? That is the paradox of change in action!
What does a paradox have to do with change? Ok, let me give you an example. Have you ever had anyone (parent, teacher, spouse, boss) tell you: "You have got to change that nasty habit of yours"? What is your immediate reaction? Does it sound something like: "What is he/she talking about? I don't do that? I would never. That's not me!" But what happens when someone (your mother, girlfriend, loving husband, partner, best friend) sincerely and unconditionally accepts that "quirky" habit of yours? It is much easier to relax and accept that you're not the perfect gal/guy you thought you where. And it is in this precise state of relaxation and acceptance that transformation or change is possible. Only when you truly accept who you are, quirks and virtues are you able to move forward to transform yourself into who you want to be! Paradoxical, eh?
So whenever you sense a resistance within you that is your cue to relax and ask yourself: "What am I resisting? How can accept what I'm now resisting?" You can see your resistance as an opportunity for growth and begin to move towards acceptance and consequently transformation.
To your growing success,
