Searching for Happiness

All my life I have been searching for happiness
in many different ways, but have never found
the real thing.

-Anonymous

How to Grow Success, Chapter XII
Letter written to Elizabeth Towne

Happy relationships, what is happiness, define happiness, what causes happiness, meaning of happiness.

Mrs. Towne was an author and publisher of the Nautilus Magazine and other famous New Thought writings. She was also a public speaker and a "Dear Abby" of sorts. People turned to her for sound and practical advice.

The above quote was written to her in search of an answer to the writer's problem - lack of joy. To which Mrs. Towne responded:

Happiness, real [joy] of the abiding, growing kind,
never comes as a result of fitting circumstances to your notions.
It comes from fitting YOURSELF to circumstances.

-Elizabeth Towne

Finding Joy

True joy comes from accepting your circumstances, just as they are. We've been taught to believe that we must first be "successful," in order to be happy. Ironically it's just the opposite.

Most people I consider successful seem to find joy in the simplest things in life, and are grateful for who they are, and what they have, even if they strive to grow further. They also live in gratitude.

Elizabeth Towne asks...

"Do you really want to be happy? Do you want [joy] enough to pay the price for it? Happiness is a jealous god. He simply will not live in the same heart with fault-finding, growls, dislikes."

My daughter Sofia- joyful! What is happiness, definition of happiness.

I believe joy is a choice. We all experience moments that are especially joyful and other moments when you feel afraid, angry or sad. And we need to accept these feelings, they are what make us human! (For more on feelings and your success go to the feelings page here).

A simple walk in the park can bring joy!

However, having a joyful outlook on life comes from practicing gratitude. How? By accepting who you are and your present circumstances in the NOW; knowing deep down that this is your starting point and rejoicing in it. Because the present moment is ALL we have!

Living in the Now

Joy and gratitude go hand-in-hand with living in the now.

Mrs. Towne emphasizes throughout her writings to live in the present:

Living is the art of adjusting one's self to the NOW. Whenever one is not enjoying it is because he is hanging with one hand to the NOW and with the other to the fleeting past, or is straining out toward the future.

The NOW is the only point one can become thoroughly adjusted to, the only place one can really enjoy. The time to plant and tend success is NOW.

How to Grow Success, Chapters V and I.

If you are enjoying where you are now, with gratitude and knowing you are moving forward toward your goals, with your feet planted in the present as your are, then you are already a success and more is coming your way.

"Be still and know."
