October 19, 2009
Hello and welcome to...
The Nautilus Ezine
Self-Help Through Self-Knowledge
"Build thee more stately mansions, oh my soul!
As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low vaulted past!
Let each new temple nobler than the last,
Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast,
Till thou at length art free,
Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea!"
-Oliver Wendell Holmes

Get ready for a major Success Marathon!
... Heroes from Elizabeth Towne's life-time (my favorite!), such as Helen Keller, Coco Chanel, James Allen and John Wooden.
1. Favorite Quote of the Month
2. Recommended Reading or Viewing and Celebrating Another Birthday!
3. Ideas Worth Spreading Worldwide
1. This Month - Two Favorite Quotes!
This month I chose two quotes to share with you. (I just couldn't decide on one favorite quote!) ;-) The first one comes from Helen Keller, another hero of mine.
Your success and happiness lies in you.
Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form
an invincible host against difficulties.
-Helen Keller
Helen Keller led an extraordinary life and was a true inspiration to many because of what she was able to accomplish despite her inability to see and hear. She was born in 1880 and before her 2nd birthday had lost her sight and hearing due to illness that nearly killed her.
Thanks to her teacher, Annie Sullivan and her relentless determination, she was able to overcome many obstacles non-hearing and non-seeing children of her time faced. Did you know that she was the first blind and deaf person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree?
If Helen Keller was able to choose happiness under such limitations, I believe anyone can. As she is quoted above:
I'll be writing more about Helen Keller, Annie Sullivan and even Alexander Graham Bell, who was a close friend of Helen. There are so many great heroes of that era who lived during Elizabeth Towne's time, and many lessons of courage and greatness we can learn from.
Speaking of which, James Allen, author of the quote below was one of them...
Here's the 2nd quote I chose for this month:
"Every thought seed sown or allowed to fall
into the mind, and take root there, produces its own, blossoming sooner or later into act, and
bearing its own fruitage of opportunity and circumstance. Good thoughts bear good fruit, bad thoughts bad fruit."
-James Allen (1864-1912) As A Man Thinketh
I really like this quote because it expresses what Elizabeth Towne taught and believed in about success and the way your thinking determines your degree of success.
What's yourfavorite quote? Let me know. Drop me a quick note and I'll include it in an upcoming issue of The Nautilus.
I just came back from going to the movies with my mom. (We were celebrating my birthday - a day early). Anyway, the movie we saw was Coco Before Chanel and I thought I'd recommend this wonderful film to you, my reader.
Besides a great cast and beautiful photography, this film is well executed in portraying the life of Coco Chanel. Her life is a testament to her tenacity and just plain stubbornness, the good kind! She never gave up, no matter what the roadblocks she encountered.
Her real name - Gabrielle Bonheur lost her mother at the tender age of two. So he could go to work, her father left her and her older sister at an orphanage run my nuns, where she lived until she was 18 years old.
There she learned to sew, a trade that helped her pave the way to becoming the great fashion designer she later turned into. But it was her strength of character and uncommon dressing philosophy that shaped her into who she became years down the road: Coco Chanel - synonym of elegance, simplicity and comfort.
She was one to think outside the box, so to speak, and it payed off. I highly recommend you see it!

"Let each new temple nobler than the last...
Till thou at length art free,
Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's un-resting sea!"
Today I chose John Wooden's informal chat on success. He was UCLA'S basketball coach, who took his team to record wins. He speaks from the heart about his childhood, the lessons learned from his father and his years of teaching and coaching. It's a little over 17 minutes long, but well worth your time and attention.
"Peace of mind attained only through self-satisfaction
in knowing you made the effort to do the best
of which you're capable."
He's funny and witty as he shares his practical wisdom in this video. Here's a bit of what he learned growing up from his father's nightly readings on his small southern Indiana farm.
The journey is better than the end.
-Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547 – 1616)
Spanish poet and novelist of Don Quixote (Book from which the famous ballet
was inspired!)
